Pheu Thai Looking To Win Over Half Of Seats

THAILAND

The Pheu Thai Party has said that it is aiming to win at 310 of the 500 seats in the House at the May 14 election, so that it can form a majority government and make it easier for its PM candidate to be accepted when both houses vote. It is currently well ahead in the polls with two in March having it on 46.6% and 49.9% of the vote.

  • If Pheu Thai needs to form a coalition, it has said that it wants to run all the economy-related ministries, so that it can implement its policies of providing stimulus to the economy. It is promising to increase incomes and boost GDP to at least 5%. It wants to increase foreign investment, ease red tape, boost tourism and agriculture.
  • Following the 2019 election, many Pheu Thai winning candidates were excluded for violating poll regulations. The party has said that it has learned from what happened then.
  • "I think that conservative groups will do everything they can to stop us such as spreading rumours that the party will ultimately bring Thaksin back home," Dr Prommin said. "That is not our goal." Dr Prommin was former PM Thaksin’s secretary-general and if Pheu Thai wins could be the PM’s secretary-general again or deputy PM.
