Pheu Thai Urged To Dump Move Forward Party To Ensure Senate Support At Next PM Vote

THAILAND

Thailand's Pheu Thai party is being urged to ditch its alliance with the Move Forward Party (MFP) ahead of the third PM vote this Thursday (the 27th of July). Vocal Thai Senator, Kittisak Rattanawaraha, stated that Pheu Thai must do this to avoid losing votes. Kittisak claims he speaks for most Senators and oppsed MFP's Pita during his attempts to win the PM position in recent weeks.

  • Pheu Thai leader Dr Cholnan Srikaew stated over the weekend that the coalition is unlikely to attain enough support if its coalition includes parties which support plans to change the lese majeste law (royal insult law) (this is likely to be in reference to MFP).
  • The Pheu Thai leader indicated that talks with Senators would continue today and that they would report back to the other 7 parties of the coalition tomorrow. The 8 party coalition is expected to reach a conclusion tomorrow and Cholnan said it will be known by Thursday who the new PM nomination will be. Property tycoon Srettha Thavisin is seen as the most likely choice.
  • These moves come amid weekend protests supporting Pita and MFP. They have been peaceful at this stage.
