PM Apologises As Tokyo SoE Extended, Vaccination Of Elderly Starts 12 Apr

JAPAN

In an evening presser, Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has apologised to the citizens of Tokyo and three surrounding prefectures for the announcement that the current COVID-19 state of emergency provisions in place will not end on 7 March, and instead will be extended by two weeks.

  • Says that an 80% decline in cases since state of emergency imposed is a good result, but that the decline in cases has slowed to the extent there is the prospect of a rebound in infections and that two more weeks of restrictions are needed to assess the situation.
  • Japan's state of emergency restrictions are far less stringent than in many other developed markets, with no 'lockdown' provisions in place as is the case in Europe.
  • Says vaccinations of the elderly will begin on 12 April, and towards the end of that month the pace of vaccinations should improve dramatically.
