FRANCE: PM Edouard Philippe has announced that the second round of France's
municipal elections will take place on June 28, coronavirus permitting.
- The first round took place on March 15, just as France went into its initial
full COVID-19 lockdown.
- The most closely-watched contests will by the second round votes in France's
largest cities.
- In Paris, incumbent Mayor Anne Hidalgo from the centre-left Socialist Party
will face Rachida Dati from the centre-right Les Republicains after Agnes Buzyn
from President Emmanuel Macron's En Marche finished a distant 3rd.
- The environmentalist Greens performed well in a number of large cities,
topping the first round in Lyon, Strasbourg, and Grenoble.
- PM Philippe faces a tough challenge in retaining the mayoralty of Le Havre,
having failed to win in the first round. He faces a candidate supported by a
number of far-left parties.
