PM Extends Territorial Waters In Ionian Sea

GREECE

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced in a speech to parliament that he will extend Greece's territorial waters in the Ionian Sea to the country's west from six to 12 miles.

  • This extension does not move Greece's territorial waters in relation to Turkey, instead extending them closer towards Italy.
  • The move is in line with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which allows the breadth of nations' territorial waters to extend up to 12 miles from shore.
  • In his speech, Mitsotakis also called Greece the EU's guarantor of maritime rights in the Eastern Mediterranean, while also stating he reserved the right to extend Greece's territorial waters in other areas.
  • Should Greece extend its waters towards Turkey, it could be seen as an aggressive move in Ankara, even if the shift is within the bounds of the UNCLOS.
