PM: Gove To Lead Review Of Domestic Vaccine Passports

UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Michael Gove will lead a review into the potential use of domestic vaccine passports.

  • In a press pool clip Johnson said on domestic vaccine passports that there are "deep and complex issues we need to explore… ethical issues… We can't be discriminatory against people who can't have the vaccine."
  • In international vaccine passports Johnson was more forthright, saying "That's the way a lot of counties are going... It's going to come on the international stage whatever."
  • The potential implementation of domestic vaccine passports - which could limit attendance at concerts, bars, sporting events, or even access to jobs to those that can prove they have taken the COVID-19 vaccine - is a controversial one in the UK.
  • Previously the gov't had dismissed them out of hand, but launching a review indicates No.10 could be coming round to the idea. The prospect of vaccine passports has significant public support (in line with broad public support for many of the stricter COVID-19 restrictions).
  • PM boosterish on the potential for lifting of all restrictions on 21 June: 'I'm very optimistic that we'll be able to get there...Hopeful but nothing can be guaranteed'. People need to be 'following guidance at each stage'.
