PM: Gov't Looking At Relaxing Some COVID-19 Measures Before Mid-Feb

UK

In a statement at odds with almost everything coming from the gov't in recent days and weeks, PM Boris Johnson says in a pool clip to journalists that the gov't is looking at potentially relaxing some COVID-19 measures before mid-February.

  • This stands in stark contrast to all other comments from the gov't in recent days and weeks that have sought to emphasise that the UK's good vaccine rollout does not mean that the UK can afford to loosen lockdown restrictions. In the last few days alone the groundwork has been laid for schools to remain closed until Easter and strict quarantine conditions to be placed on inbound travelers to the UK.
  • Johnson's comments less likely about actually relaxing measures (hospitalisations and deaths from COVID-19 remain very high) and more likely seeking to placate backbench Conservative MPs, a group of whom have become increasingly vocal about the gov't providing a plan and timeframe for getting the UK out of full lockdown.
