PM Imposes 'Virus Measures' In 3 Areas, Wants To Avoid State Of Emergency

JAPAN

Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has stated that he is placing three prefectures - Osaka, Hyogo, and Miyagi - under 'virus measures' to contain the spread of COVID-19, but has stated that he wants to avoid calling an official 'state of emergency' in these areas.

  • The measures will include shorter business hours, asking people to work from home, and refraining from activities like karaoke.
  • While Japan's COVID-19 statistics show the country has proved much more effective in containing the virus than its western peers, there has been a slow but steady acceleration in the rate of new cases being confirmed in recent weeks (see chart below)
  • The gov't remains committed to hosting the Olympic Games in Tokyo this year, with its potential cancellation for a second time being viewed as a potential resigning issue for the gov't, coming just months ahead of the legislative election due by 22 October.
