PM Johnson To Hold Presser w/Germany's Scholz 1515BST

Following talks at 10 Downing Street, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz are expected to hold a press conference at around 1515BST (1015ET, 1615CET).

  • Each leader is looking to put pressure on the other in different areas. For Johnson, he will be looking to convince Scholz to take a more hardline stance towards Russia, particularly in the form of the provision of lethal weaponry to Ukraine, as well as seeking to decouple German energy supplies from Russia at a faster pace.
  • For Scholz, he is set to raise the issue of the Northern Ireland protocol. Johnson is seen as coming under increasing pressure to invoke Article 16 of the protocol that would see it disapplied. Scholz set to warn Johnson that any such action would lead to swift EU retaliation that would damage UK economy and EU-UK relations.
