PM Suga To Decide Friday On Ending COVID-19 Emergency Early-Kyodo

Kyodo News reporting that Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will make a decision on Friday regarding a potential end to Japan's COVID-19 state of emergency.

  • Current planned end date for restrictions is March 7, but Cabinet meeting today decided this could be brought forward in areas that have seen a marked decline in new cases and hospitalisations.
  • 10 prefectures are currently under emergency measures, and six could exit measures early. However, Tokyo and neighboring Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama are all set to remain under COVID-19 restrictions due to still relatively high new case numbers.
