PMIs Recover But Still Sub-50

GERMAN DATA

Germany September flash PMI was 46.2 (vs 44.6 prior). Services printed at 49.8 (vs 47.3 prior; 47.1 cons). Manufacturing was 39.8 (vs 39.1 prior; 39.5 cons). The prints all remain in contractionary territory, but are off the low levels seen in August. Key notes from the release are:

  • "The downturn continued to be driven by a drop in demand for goods and services, with total inflows of new work falling for the fifth consecutive month in September."
  • "Both monitored sectors recorded marked reductions in new business from abroad."
  • "Prices charged by service providers continued to rise relatively sharply, although the rate of inflation sank to a 28-month low."
  • "By contrast, input cost inflation faced by businesses ticked up for the second month running to the quickest since May."
  • "Sentiment weakened in both monitored sectors, although in the case of services it remained marginally positive."
  • "Employment fell slightly at the end of the third quarter amid broad-based caution towards hiring."
