PMQs At Top Of The Hour With PM Set To Face Qs Over Cameron's Lobbying

UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson due to face prime minister's questions at the top of the hour (click for link), with some potentially difficult questions arising for the PM regarding the lobbying efforts of former Conservative Prime Minister (and Johnson's school and university contemporary) David Cameron.

  • The gov't and indeed the (supposedly neutral) civil service is facing increasing scrutiny over the actions of Cameron, who attempted to lobby Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Matt Hancock on behalf of Australian financier Lex Greenshill. Emerging today is the story that former Chief Commercial Officer (in charge of gov't procurement) took a job for Greenshill while still working for the civil service.
  • The main opposition centre-left Labour Party is trying to push for a broad inquiry into lobbying at the heart of gov't, painting Johnson's Conservatives as a party linked to cronyism.
  • Other likely sources of questioning to the PM likely to be on the violence seen in Northern Ireland in recent weeks linked to many issues including sectarianism, the Northern Ireland protocol, criminal gangs, and COVID-19 lockdowns.
