EMISSIONS: Poland Likely to Miss EU 2030 Emissions Target: OECD

EMISSIONS

Poland is likely to fall short of the EU’s target to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 compared with 1990 levels according to the OECD Economic Survey on Poland.

  • Polish emissions were 23% below 1990 levels in 2022.
  • The OECD calls on Poland to target a more ambitious coal phase-out plan that also includes the phasing out of lignite.
  • The energy sector accounts for more than 40% of Polish emissions due to the reliance on coal-fired generation.
  • The report is stressing the importance of Poland’s nuclear expansion in the country’s decarbonisation and warns “any potential delays will have an impact on the decarbonisation and cost overruns should be managed carefully”.
  • The OECD is also recommending Poland to set a clear long-term approach to carbon pricing.
