POLAND: Main Opposition Party Protests Against Subsidy Decision

POLAND
  • Opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski said that his Law and Justice (PiS) filed a lawsuit against the National Electoral Commission's (PKW's) decision to deprive the party of its share of state subsidy over alleged financial irregularities. Following the announcement of PKW's decision, the party managed to collect around PLN5mn in donations from its supporters, which some analysts claim could have a mobilising effect on the party's electorate. At the same time, PiS caucus leader Mariusz Blaszczak said that the loan the party took to finance the previous parliamentary election campaign amounted to PLN35mn, while monthly operating costs are PLN2mn, which means that PiS will need to "tighten the belt."
  • Ruling coalition members used the latest rounds of interviews to defend Prime Minister Donald Tusk's controversial decision to withdraw his counter-signature under the presidential nomination for a judge, who - the ruling coalition insists - is ineligible to serve in one of the top judicial bodies. The opposition and Supreme Court spokesperson argue that the Prime Minister cannot expunge his counter-signature at will, regardless of the reasons behind such a decision.
  • Climate Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska told Radio Zet that the government sees room for a further reduction of electricity tariffs from 2026 but the final decision will be made by the power regulator. She added that the government intends to extend current energy price caps into 2025.
  • Sources told WP.pl that Law and Justice may take longer than expected to announce its candidate for the 2025 presidential election. The initial idea was to unveil the candidate on the Independence Day (November 11).
