POLAND: PiS Subsidy Decision Eyed This Week, Cabinet Holds Meeting

POLAND
  • A senior official from the Chancellery of the Prime Minister (KPRM) called on the National Electoral Commission (NEC) to take action against the main opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party amid allegations that its members misused public funds to finance the party's election campaign. The NEC is scheduled to meet and discuss the matter on Thursday and the most severe punitive measure it can can deploy would be to deprive PiS of a large part of its subsidy from the state budget. However, the Commission has so far appeared reluctant to take such radical steps and repeatedly asked the KPRM to provide more evidence in the case.
  • Ex-Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki confirmed that PiS has commissioned studies to pick an optimal presidential candidate, with around 10 names under review at this stage. President Andrzej Duda's second term will expire in August 2025 and the election must take place no more than 100 days before that.
  • The cabinet holds its weekly meeting today.
