Poland To Transfer MiG-29 Fighter Jets To Ukraine

UKRAINE

Polish President Andrzej Duda's chief aide Pawel Szrot confirmed that Warsaw will transfer a number of its MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine as part of an international coalition the day after Duda told CNN on the fringes of his Abu Dhabi visit that Poland is ready to donate its warplanes.

  • Duda yesterday suggested that Poland would transfer all of the MiG-29 fighters that are currently serving in its air force and added that he believes Ukraine will eventually be able to receive Western F-16 jets.
  • His aide said today that Poland will not donate "a great number" of jets, certainly "not a number corresponding to the number of donated battle tanks." He reiterated that Poland wants to transfer its jets as part of a broader coalition of donors.
  • A Polish plan to donate fighter jets to Ukraine shortly after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion fell through last year, but local media reported that Warsaw did transfer some MiG-29 jets disguised as spare parts.
