Poll Shows Governing PD Facing Tough Challenge In Tuscany Vote

ITALY

Latest Ipsos Poll shows the governing centre-left coalition faces a tough challenge from the centre-right in the Tuscan regional election to be held September 20-21.

  • Alongside Emilia-Romagna, Umbria, and Marche, Tuscany forms part of the so-called 'red belt' regions that are the stronghold of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD). Since the advent of elected regional presidents in 1995, Tuscany has only returned those from the PD and its predecessor parties.
  • Ipsos poll, August 24-September 1: Giani (centre-left) 43%, Ceccardi (centre-right) 42%.
  • Scenari Politici/WinPoll, August 27-28: Giani (centre-left) 43%, Ceccardi (centre-right) 42.5%
  • Of the seven Italian regions holding elections in September, four of them have incumbent PD presidents. Opinion polling indicates the region of Campania around the city of Naples will remain in PD hands, but in Marche the centre-right coalition retains a strong lead in polls, while Apulia and Tuscany are too-close-to-call.
  • Should the PD lose two or even three of these regions, it could lead to a backlash at the national level against the party leadership.
