Poll Shows Voters Expect Macron, Le Pen In 2nd Round Of 2022 Election

The latest opinion poll on voter expectations for the 2022 presidential election shows that much of the French electorate anticipates a repeat of the 2017 election in the second-round run off, with incumbent President Emmanuel Macron facing off against right-wing nationalist National Rally (RN) leader Marine Le Pen.

  • Macron scored the highest percentage of respondents saying that he will either certainly or probably make the second round of the presidential election, with 18% of respondents certain he will make the run-off and 46% saying that he probably will, a combined total of 64%.
  • Le Pen comes in second, with 16% certain she will make the second round and 45% saying they think it is likely that she will, a combined total of 61%.

  • Among the three most prominent candidates for the centre-right Gaullist Les Republicains (LR) presidential nomination, president of the regional council of Hauts-de-France Xavier Bertrand is seen as the most likely to make the second round, with respondents split 50:50 over whether he will or will not make the run-off. The other two prominent possible LR nominees were seen as much less likely to make the second round, with Ile-de-France regional council president Valerie Pecresse only seen as making the second round by 30% of respondents, and former LR leader Laurent Wauquiez by 27%.
  • Far-left LaFrance Insoumise (Fance Unbowed, FI) leader Jean-Luc Melenchon is viewed as extremely unlikely to make the second round, with a resounding 79% of respondents saying that he is set to be eliminated in the first round.
