Powell Cites Evidence Showing Policy Is Restrictive

FED

Chair Powell, asked how restrictive policy is, repeats some of the same lines from the June meeting press conference, citing the impact of higher rates in the housing and labor markets as "empirical" evidence that policy is restrictive:

  • "POWELL: WE DO THINK POLICY IS RESTRICTIVE AS APPROPRIATE"
  • "POWELL: RESTRICTIVE POLICY WORKING HAND-IN-HAND WITH SUPPLY"
He once again deflects on the question of whether the Fed risks cutting too late or too early:
  • "POWELL: RISK ON INFLATION SIDE IS THAT YOU MOVE TOO QUICKLY"
  • "POWELL: OTHER RISK IS THAT YOU WAIT TOO LONG AND LABOR SOFTENS"
  • "POWELL: RISKS HAVE COME BACK MUCH CLOSER INTO BALANCE".
