POWER: Carbon Storage Rate Forecasts Over Estimated

Forecasts for subsurface carbon storage rates of up to 30 gigatonnes (Gt) CO2/yr by 2050 have been overestimated amid overlooked limitations, according to a paper by Imperial College London.

  • The researchers estimate that a maximum global storage rate of 16Gt C02/yr is achievable by 2050, lower than previous estimates, amid geological, geopolitical and technological economic limitations.
