POWER: Finland Ready for Winter Power Demand: Finnish Energy Agency

POWER

Finland is expected to have sufficient electricity to meet winter demand, even during peak consumption on cold days – where demand is estimated at around 15GW – thanks to domestic production and imports, the Finnish energy agency said today.

  • Finland's market-available production capacity on cold, windy days is estimated at 11.8GW, factoring in the unavailability of the Olkiluoto 2 nuclear plant.
  • Up to 3.4GW can be imported from Sweden, Estonia, and Norway via transmission connections.
  • Finland retired 200MW of older CHP capacity and shifted the 565MW Meri-Pori plant to backup while adding over 1.3GW of new wind power capacity in 2024.
  • “In situations of scarcity of supply, consumption is expected to be flexible due to the effect of high prices”, it added.
  • The agency’s assessment is in line with previous studies done by Fingrid and Entso-e.
  • Additionally, natural gas supply has improved since last winter, with the Balticconnector pipeline (70 GWh/d) back online and Inkoo LNG terminal (140 GWh/d) operational. Last winter's peak demand was 134 GWh/d.
