POWER: French, British, German Power Demand to Rise 4% Winter on Winter

Power demand in Germany, France and the UK this winter is expected to rise 4%, or 24.3TWh, above last year’s levels due to normal weather conditions, compared with mild weather last winter, the LSEG winter outlook showed on Tuesday. 

  • A slight demand recovery, supported by the ongoing electrification, is also expected to support demand this winter.
  • Residual demand this winter in the three countries is forecast to rise by 23.2TWh, or 5.6%, on the year.
  • The weather risk range in Germany between Dec24 and Feb25 is seen at 24.5GWh/h for wind output and at 2.5GWh/h for power consumption.
  • For France, consumption related weather risks are seen at 16.8GWh/h and for wind supply at 7.8GWh/h.
  • French nuclear output is forecast to around 48GW this winter, 3GW higher on the year, with LSEG forecasting French nuclear generation at 354TWh this year.
  • French power prices this winter are expected at a discount to Germany in all months, with spreads ranging -3€/MWh to -14€/MWh.
