POWER: Germany’s Wind Output to Climb Just 1% On-Year in 2024: RTRS

POWER

Germany's wind generation is set to grow by only 1% in 2024, the slowest pace in 3 years, due to low wind speeds and a slowdown in additions, according to Reuters

  • In comparison, BNEF forecasts German wind output to be 22.4% above 2023 levels this summer, while wind output is forecast to be 4.1% lower year on year in winter 2024/25.
  • In September, German wind generation is forecasted at 13.43GWh, a 46% gain over output in September 2023. However, in 4Q24 wind will drop at average or about 12% per month, RTRS said.
  • Additionally, Germany had 252 new turbines connected and 282 decommissioned, decreasing the total number of operational turbines.
  • In 1H24, Germany added around 900 new turbines, or around 5GW approved for connection to the country's grid, according to government data.
  • Wind power accounted for around 28% of Germany's generation over the first 7 months of 2024, up from 27% in 2023, according to data from Ember.
