Power, Grid Associations Against EU Power Transformer Proposals

The power sector association Eurelectric and power grid association E.DSO has sent a letter to the European Commission on the proposed new rules regarding electricity transformers, citing “inadequate planning and lack of communication”, according to Euractive.

  • The proposed changes include making transformers more efficient - reducing losses of power by up to 0.5 percentage points –
  • But this would make them larger and lead to about 30% more material being used – most of which is copper. Therefore, the return of investment will be negative and the efficiency gains will not cover the additional cost.
  • This is due to copper prices having increased 60% over the past three years, the letter states.
