Italian hydropower reserves last week – calendar week 36 – were broadly stable on the week at 3.23TWh, compared with 3.24TWh the week prior, narrowing the deficit to the five-year average, Entso-E data showed.

  • Stocks narrowed the deficit to the five-year average to 0.08TWh, compared with 0.13TWh the week before.
  • Reserves also narrowed the deficit to last year’s levels to 0.22TWh, compared with 0.30TWh the week prior.
  • Power demand in Italy averaged 35.42GW last week, slightly down from 35.44GW the week before.
  • Gas-fired generation last week increased by 1.24GW to 16GW – the highest level for any week so far this year.
  • Run-of-river generation last week increased by 309MW to 4.1GW. Output from pumped storage was stable at 583MW last week. Hydro output from reservoirs last week was also broadly stable at 654MW.
  • Wind output in Italy last week declined by 529MW to 1.03GW. Solar PV output declined by 858MW last week to 3.49GW.
  • Precipitation Torino last week totalled 108.2mm, well above the 30-year normal of 7.35mm.
  • Looking forward, ECMWF weather forecasts for Torino – close to Italy’s hydro-intensive region – continue to suggest slightly above normal this week to total 12.7mm, compared with the seasonal average of 6.8mm.
