POWER: Poland Dec Rises to Resist Loss in EU ETS, Coal Amid Outages

POWER

Poland’s Dec power contract has rebounded slightly from the previous session to resist price falls in EU emissions and coal markets amid unplanned outages at two units at the 1.9GW Polaniec coal plant. However, average temperatures in Warsaw are anticipated to remain above the seasonal average throughout 6–10-day ECWMF forecast – which could lower heating demand.

  • Poland Dec24 baseload power settled at PLN465.50/MWh compared to its settled price of PLN462.34/MWh on 26 Nov, according to data on Polish power exchange TGE.
  • EUA DEC 24 down 1.6% at 68.11 EUR/MT
  • Rotterdam Coal DEC 24 down 0.5% at 119.5 USD/MT at 14:40 BST
  • Two 242MW at the 1.9GW Polaniec coal plant will have unplanned outages over 30 Nov-2 Dec and 30 Nov-22 Dec, latest Remit data show.
  • The 834MW unit B7 at the Jaworzno 2 coal unit will still be due to have planned maintenance over 28 Nov-2 Dec due to a boiler leakage.
  • The Dec contract traded 32 times in 35 lots from 53 lots exchanged in the previous session.
  • Dec opened at PLN461/MWh – the low for the day – before rising to PLN467/MWh – the high for the day – towards the end of the session.
  • Closer in, the day-ahead fell to PLN515.58/MWh for Thursday delivery from PLN707.18/MWh for Wednesday amid wind output forecasts to be at 4.74GW tomorrow compared to 1.89GW today.
  • Looking slightly ahead, wind is expected to drop to 2.36GW on 29 Nov (Fri) – which may support delivery prices. Wind will then be at 0.970-1.87GW over 30 Nov- 1 Dec.
  • Average temperatures in Warsaw are set to be above the seasonal norm over 28 Nov- 8 Dec at between 1.4-4.2C compared to the 30-year norm of 0.7-1.6C.
