POWER: Poland to Ask EC to Greenlight Nuclear Plant Financing
POWER
Poland plans to request the European Commission’s approval this week for a plan to finance its first nuclear power plant, deputy climate minister Maciej Bando said, cited by Reuters.
- "This week I will sign an official request to the European Commission, starting the notification process," Bando said.
- Poland is planning to build a nuclear plant on the Baltic Sea coast and is currently negotiating funding with US partners.
- The Polish government is working on legislation that will allow it to inject 60bn zloty into state-owned Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe, which oversees the construction the first of the three reactors by 2035.
- The deputy minister expects Poland to receive greenlight from the EC by mid-2025 for public aid for the project, which will include a scheme for pricing the electricity produced via a CfDs.
- In late-August, Poland’s Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe applied to the Polish government to start preparatory work for the country’s first 1-1.6GW nuclear power plant.
- Poland is eyeing a total nuclear capacity of around 6-9GW in the upcoming decades.
