Spanish hydropower reserves last week – calendar week 39 – edged down to 47.8% of capacity, down from 47.9% of capacity the week prior according to data from Spain’s Environmental Ministry.

  • Spanish hydropower generation from reservoirs last week fell by 415MW on the week to 1.4GW. Generation from pumped storage declined by 300MW to 534MW.
  • Nuclear generation in Spain was stable on the week at 6.99GW.
  • Gas-fired generation last week decreased by 1.55GW to 3.71GW.
  • Solar PV output last week edged lower by 146MW to 5.27GW, while wind output increased by 1.71GW.
  • Power demand in Spain last week fell slightly to 25.28GW, down from 25.67GW the week prior.
  • Precipitation in the hydro-intensive region of Huesca totalled 2.8mm last week, below the 30-year normal of 8mm.
  • Looking ahead, the latest ECMWF forecast suggested precipitation in Huesca is seen at 8.3mm this week, slightly above the seasonal average of 5.8mm.
  • Mean temperatures in Madrid are forecast to remain above the seasonal average this week at 19-21C.
  • Wind output in Spain is forecast at 1.77GW to 8.33GW during base-load hours for the remainder of this week. Solar PV output is forecast at 8.5GW to 9.3GW during peak-load hours according to SpotRenewables.
