POWER: Statnett Recommends Permanent EPAD Auction

Statnett recommended to make EPAD auctions permanent, arguing the auctions are the best mechanism for meeting NVE’s goals according to a report. 

  • The auction would help to improve liquidity and price formation for EPADS, while limiting Statnett’s risk. 
  • On Tuesday, Nordpool won the EPAD tender that will take place twice a month and will start at the end of 2024 for at least one year. 
  • The new auctions, in which Statnett will be buying and selling monthly, quarterly and calendar capacity contracts on three borders (NO1/NO2, NO1/NO5, NO3/NO4), will take place twice a month and are scheduled to start at the end of 2024 to last for at least one year. 
  • Since February 2023, Svenska Kraftnät offers auctions of EPAD contracts in the Swedish bidding zones SE2, SE3 and SE4, corresponding to total of around 10% of the transmission capacity between bidding zones SE2-SE3 and SE3-SE4, split on multiple durations of the contracts.
