POWER: Swiss Mull Nuclear Ban Lift

The Swiss Federal Council has suggested that the ban on the construction of new nuclear power plants, which has been enforced since 2018, poses a risk for the decommissioning of old units and is against its “objective of openness to different technologies”, it said.

  • The four nuclear power plants currently in operation supply around a third of domestic total production- all have unlimited licenses to run once they are safe.
  • If nuclear plants shut down, other facilities need to fill the electricity gap. It's uncertain if renewables can meet growing demand in time, according to the council.
  • The consultation will last until March 2025, with the parliament debating the proposal.
