Think Tank Ember is stressing the importance of a quicker rollout of battery storages in the EU and Germany due to growing renewables generation, especially during peak hours, that is causing negative prices, cited by Reuters. 

  • "More battery storage can help Germany take advantage of abundant home-grown solar to replace expensive fossil fuels”, Beatrice Petrovich, senior analyst at Ember, said.
  • "We haven't seen the same ambitious strategies from the EU that are in place for renewables ... for battery storage and other clean flexibility solutions” Petrovich said.
  • Germany could have avoided up to €2.5mn in natural gas imports in June with 2GW of additional battery storage, Ember said.
  • Germany is planning to add 3.7GW of new grid batteries by 2027.
