President AMLO Announces End To Diplomatic Relations With Ecuador

LATAM
  • An ongoing spat between the presidents in Mexico and Ecuador has erupted into a diplomatic crisis following actions over the weekend. Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa decided to send police to storm the Mexican embassy on Friday night and arrest Jorge Glas, a former vice president convicted of corruption who had been granted asylum. The actions are said to have violated international agreements and heightened the political tensions in the region.
  • Mexico has since announced an end to the diplomatic relationship with Ecuador and will also halt conversations over trade. After Mexico’s diplomatic staff in Ecuador returned home on Sunday, Foreign Affairs Minister Alicia Barcena said the government of Ecuador had violated the Vienna convention and Mexico are now expected to bring a formal complaint against them before the United Nations.
  • Risks of a regional backlash may be growing as Nicaragua confirmed similar action. President Daniel Ortega declared in a statement its “sovereign decision to break all diplomatic relations with the Ecuadorean government” following the “unusual and reprehensible action.”
  • While the broader international community have condemned the provocative act, there appears to be domestic support in Ecuador, with pollster Alvaro Merchante saying that there’s more approval than disapproval for the raid.
