President Cyril Ramaphosa To Announce Cabinet Reshuffle At 17:00GMT/19:00SAST
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will announce the expected reshuffle of his Cabinet in one hour's time via a televised address. His speech will be streamed online by public broadcaster SABC (click here to watch) and other local media outlets.
- Minister of Trade and Industry Ebrahim Patel was sworn in as an MP this morning, which comes after Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana became lawmaker last week. South African law allows the President to nominate just two people who are not members of parliament to the Cabinet. The swearing in of Patel and Godongwana paves the way for Ramaphosa to tap two vacant positions with non-MPs.
- As part of the Cabinet reshuffle, President Ramaphosa will appoint the new Electricity Minister after announcing the creation of the portfolio in his State of the Nation Address. Speculation is rife that he might hand the portfolio to Kgosientso Ramokgopa, his key aide for investment and infrastructure.
- Paul Mashatile is widely expected to replace David Mabuza as South Africa's Deputy President. It is a tradition of the ruling African National Congress to bring administration roles into line with party roles and Mashatile has recently won the race for deputy leadership of the party, replacing Mabuza.
- Other vacancies to be filled have been created by the expected departure of Transport Minister Fikle Mbalula, who took on the full-time role of ANC Secretary General, and the resignation of Public Service and Administration Minister Ayanda Dlodlo.
- The Mail & Guardian reported that Ramaphosa may promote Thembi Nkadimeng, currently a Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance, to helm of the ministry. Nkadimeng would replace Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, who voted with opposition parties to launch impeachment proceedings against the President.
- There has been speculation that Ramaphosa could replace Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, who has also become increasingly critical of the leader.
