President Pinera Avoids Impeachment As Senate Reject Motion

  • President Sebastian Pinera avoided an impeachment motion brought following revelations of a potential conflict of interest in his family's sale of a mining project stake.
    • The lower house approved the impeachment charges, setting up a trial in the 43-member Senate, where senators voted 24 in favour of removal, 18 against and one abstention. The total in favour was five votes short of the two-thirds support of 29 senators needed to oust the president. (AP)
  • Today at 2pm local time a mixed committee composed of senators and deputies will discuss differences regarding a fourth pension fund withdrawal.
