President Ramaphosa Warns Of Backlash Against Taking Israel To ICJ

  • President Cyril Ramaphosa warned that South Africa may see "superpower backlash" for taking Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its actions in the Gaza Strip. The leader told his party, the African National Congress (ANC), at the end of its annual lekgotla that this could manifest in the lead-up to this year's national and provincial elections in the form of a "regime change agenda."
  • Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor will host a media briefing at 13:00GMT/15:00SAST to discuss the upcoming AU Summit, the handover of rotating BRICS chairmanship to the Russian Federation, the Gaza situation in the wake of the recent ICJ ruling, and the recent summits of the NAM and the G77 Plus China.
  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) trimmed South Africa's 2024 growth forecast by 0.8pp to +1.0% Y/Y and called for reforms to address debt burden and logistical constraints.
