US: President Trump has added three high-profile lawyers to his defence team in
the Senate trial starting next week to determine whether he is removed from
office.
- Initial team comprised White House counsel Pat Cipollone, outside attorney Jay
Sekulow, former Florida AG Pam Bondi, and Trump's personal counsel Jane Raskin.
- Three additions are Ken Starr and Robert Ray, both independent counsels
involved in the investigation of President Bill Clinton in the 1990's that led
to the president's eventual impeachment, and Alan Dershowitz; Harvard Law School
professor and defence attorney for OJ Simpson, Jeffrey Epstein, and Harvey
Weinstein.
- The addition of these individuals may not make a substantive difference to the
outcome of the trial - given that the Republican majority in the Senate should
ensure Trump remains in office - but could make the arguments in Trump's defence
a more bombastic event.
