CHILE: Presidential Candidate Toha Gains In Polls
CHILE
- After announcing her candidacy for this year’s presidential election last week, Centre-left contender Carolina Toha saw a meaningful improvement in her popularity, according to latest polls. Toha was backed by 12% of voters in a poll by Panel Ciudadano UDD, up from 3% last month, but still behind leading centre-right candidate Evelyn Matthei, who polled 25%, as well as candidates on the hard right.
- In a separate poll by Cadem, Toha polled 10%, also up from 3% in February, but behind Matthei with 18%, and hard-right candidates Johannes Kaiser and Jose Antonio Kast, with 13% and 11%, respectively. The Presidential election is scheduled for November 16.
- Today, Presidential candidate Jose Antonio Kast is due to speak to reporters at 1230GMT(0830ET). No macro data are due, with focus this week on tomorrow’s BCCh economist survey, which is likely to show expectations for an extended rate pause.
- In other news, a Chilean ministerial committee approved the Playa Verde project that aims to recovery copper from mining waste, revoking a previous rejection on environmental grounds.
