Preventative Evacuations Prompted By Floods, Markets Closed For Holiday

  • Days of heavy rainfall In Chile have prompted severe floods that have blocked off roads and prompted evacuation in the centre of the country. Santiago metropolitan area governor Claudio Orego said this is the worst weather front we have had in 10 years.
  • This led authorities to declare a "red alert" and order preventive evacuations in various towns in the south of Santiago. Flooding around the Mapocho river has also cut off routes leading towards the Pacific Ocean, hitting families who live on its banks and leaving small towns isolated.
  • The interior ministry have provided some statistics this morning, detailing that two people have died, three people are missing and that 4,272 people have been affected.
    • They have also explained that 59 homes have been destroyed, with over 1,000 additional dwellings experiencing damage.
  • Chilean markets are closed for the local holiday (Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul).
