Prime Age Participation Rate At Pre-Pandemic Levels

  • The two tenth increase in u/e rate was boosted by rounding, up from 3.43 to 3.57% (cons 3.4%) from what was the lowest reading since 1969. In this cycle it has only been lower four months (through a period starting July).
  • It came as household employment increased ‘only’ 177k whilst labour force saw another strong 419k - the data can be volatile but 1.7M have entered the labour force in the last three months.
  • This labour supply will be encouraging for the Fed, with total participation rate up from 62.35 to 62.47% (cons 62.4), a new post-pandemic high, but more of note is the prime age rate returning to pre-pandemic levels at 83.1% (+0.4pp on the month, +0.7pps since Dec).
