Prime Minister Borne Resigns, Will Remain In Place Until Reshuffle

FRANCE

The Elysee has confirmed that French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne has resigned and will stay on caretaker until a new government is named.

  • President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement on X: "Madam Prime Minister, dear [Borne] , your work in the service of our Nation has been exemplary every day. You implemented our project with the courage, commitment and determination of women of states. With all my heart, thank you."
  • France24 reported this morning that Borne's position, "has been tenuous ever since an immigration bill pushed by Macron was voted down in parliament last month."
  • According to France24, "a close Macron adviser said the president was "finalising his choices" and "things will move at the start of the week, probably with a new prime minister Monday." Macron is "in a hurry", added a second advisor."
  • Politico noted on Friday: "Macron has not yet given indications as to what the makeup of his next government could be, perhaps reveling in the unpredictability. A source familiar with the French executive noted that Cabinet reshuffles are “the last domain where [Macron] remains in control of things,” after a crises-filled and harrowing year."
