Prosecutor Widens Probe to Investigate President Castillo

  • Peru’s national prosecutor Pablo Sanchez ordered the expansion of a preliminary investigation against President Pedro Castillo for allegations of criminal organization, influence peddling and collusion.
    • The investigation -- initially opened against former minister Juan Silva and six lawmakers -- was expanded after a technical legal analysis given severity of accusations, the prosecutor’s office said on Twitter.
  • Peruvians remain divided on calling a constituent assembly to rewrite the constitution with 47% backing the idea and 49% opposed to it, according to an Institute of Peruvian Studies poll published in La Republica. (BBG)
    • 49% of those polled said there should be some changes to the constitution, 31% said it should be replaced and 17% said it should remain as it is.
    • President Castillo’s disapproval increased to 70% in May from 67% in April
  • Separately, President Castillo named Juan Ramon Lira Loayza labor minister, replacing Betssy Chavez, who was censured by congress.
    • Castillo swore in Loayza as labor minister in a webcast event Sunday night.
