Protests Renew Calls For President's Resignation

PERU
  • Protests against the Boluarte administration were resumed on Wednesday, with mass demonstrations in Lima and similar activity seen in other parts of the country. According to the Ombudsman’s Office, there were marches in 59 provinces and road blockades in 64, representing 32.7% of the territories nationwide.
  • The Interior Ministry reported that there were just 21,000 people mobilized throughout Peru. Minister Vicente Romero indicated that the Peruvian National Police displayed high professionalism during the July 19 mobilization. Protestors were once again demanding the resignation of the president and an early election just four months after a long wave of protests that shook the country between December and March.
  • This time around, the protests were called for and coordinated by mine workers and unions, who've threatened a work stoppage to exert pressure. Peru’s highway authority, Sutran, reported Wednesday that seven highways had been blocked by demonstrators taking part in the new wave of anti-government protests. (BBG)
