Protests Set To Continue, Consumer Confidence Slumps

  • 42 people have now died during anti-government protests that began two weeks ago amid discontent fuelled by growing poverty and inequality during the pandemic, Colombia's human rights ombudsman said Tuesday.
    • Protests in Colombia are likely to continue after the first talks between President Iván Duque and the National Strike Committee ended without a deal Monday. The committee, including unions and other social organizations call for renewed nationwide protests against the government.
  • Thursday will see Manufacturing production and retail sales data. On Friday, markets will await the release of first quarter growth figures along with trade balance data.
  • Consumer confidence in the South American nation slumped in April to its lowest level since early in the pandemic last year.
