Public Turning Against Gov't On Handling Of Pandemic

According to the latest Redfield and Wilton Strategies opinion poll, the German public is turning against the gov't on its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, even if an increasing number of respondents now believe the worst of the pandemic is behind the country.

  • Where do Germans feel Germany is at this moment with respect to the timeline of the coronavirus pandemic?
    The worst is behind us: 49% (+10%), The worst is yet to come: 30%

  • Germany has struggled with a rising caseload and a slow vaccine rollout in the early months of 2021, although recently both weekly new caseloads and fatalities have both shown signs of declining from their mid-April peaks.

  • The rising public antipathy towards the federal gov'ts handling of the pandemic is also likely a contributor towards the poor polling numbers currently being recorded by the centre-right Christian Democratic Union, the party formerly led by Chancellor Angela Merkel and heading into the September election with the unpopular Armin Laschet as its chancellor candidate.
