Putin: Russia Has Formed Reserve Of Law Enforcement To Help Lukashenko

In an interview on state television, Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that at the request of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, his gov't has formed a reserve of 'law enforcement agencies' to assist Lukashenko if "extremist forces cross the red lines" in protests or looting, but at present there is 'no need for that yet'

  • Putin also states that he believes the detention of Russian individuals in Belarus ahead of the August 9 presidential election was due to a Ukraine-US intelligence operation.
  • EU and other European states will be watching the Kremlin's actions in relation to Belarus closely. Comes after multiple meetings between Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and officials from the EU, European nations, and the US in recent days.
