Q&A Begins - Powell Says Next Meeting or One After Could Be Time To Slow Hikes

  • Q: Is a downshift in December contingent on better inflation data?
  • A: We need to see inflation coming down decisively, a series of down readings. I never thought that would be the appropriate test for slowing the pace of increases or for identifying the appropriately restrictive level. We ned to bring our policy to a sufficiently restrictive level to bring inflation down to the 2% objective. We'll know that level by assessing financial conditions tightening, data points and lags. We'll be looking at real rates across the yield curve.
  • Powell says next meeting or meeting after that could be time to slow hikes.
