POLAND: Race For Second Place In Presidential Elex Gets Tighter

POLAND
  • The latest opinion poll showed that Confederation's Slawomir Mentzen took over Law and Justice's (PiS's) Karol Nawrocki as the runner-up in the presidential election, with both trailing Civic Coalition's (KO's) Rafal Trzaskowski. While inferring too much from a single survey might be premature, Nawrocki's underwhelming campaign and a steady uptrend in Mentzen's support may translate into a tight race for the second spot guaranteeing participation in the run-off. Mentzen has been capitalising on his free-market, anti-EU, anti-immigrant and anti-establishment rhetoric, while also being vocal about his scepticism over further support to Ukrainian refugees and war effort.
  • Education Minister Barbara Nowacka said that the government will not quit working on big tech taxation, even as incoming US ambassador Thomas Rose warned that Poland should "rescind the tax to avoid the consequences." Separately, Development Funds and Regional Policy Minister Katarzyna Pelczynska-Nalecz said that now is not the good time to discuss digital taxes because it could weigh on relations with the US.
  • Climate and Environment Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska said she was hoping that Poland would not need to extend household power price freeze beyond 3Q2025 as initial information from utilities suggested that the revised tariffs may be at or below the current maximum price of PLN500/MWh.
