Raimondo: China Might Reciprocate US Tariff Reduction

US-CHINA

Comments from US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo hitting wires on China tariffs. According to Bloomberg, a decision on China tariffs is coming "very soon."

  • Raimondo reportedly suggested that a potential US tariff reduction on Chinese exports may come with a reciprocal easing on the Chinese side.
  • To be noted: a number of news outlets predicted a decision on tariffs either shortly before, or after, the meeting between US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Saturday on the margins of the G-20.
  • The decision didn’t materialise and Biden administration officials continued to resist offering a timeline for a decision. Yesterday, Raimondo promised a decision would be forthcoming “shortly,” and Biden told reporters at a press spray in Delaware that his administration are “…having further discussions on that.”
  • A call between President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping expected to take place in within the next week or two may be the next key meeting to follow.
  • Blinken told reporters yesterday that “…President Xi and President Biden... will have an opportunity to speak in the weeks ahead…”
