Ramaphosa Eskom Accusations Speculation; Magashule in Charge of 'Step Aside' Process

  • Former Eskom CEO Molefe accused Ramaphosa of having a hand in state capture of Eskom during his tenure as vice president – asserting that he was involved in helping the Gupta family secure the Optimum coal mine from Glencore as he had the most to benefit from the deal.

  • ANC Secretary General has been placed in charge of the of the 'step aside' process in which he himself is implicated – dramatically reducing the likelihood of him being forced to step aside from his position.
    • Magashule also says he is eyeing a run for the role of ANC president, which would see more power shift in his direction - a major risk to Ramaphosa.
    • The step-aside process is set to last a few months, but the deadline for Magahule to step aside is coming in the next two weeks, which will be interesting to monitor with outcomes now determined by internal party institutions
