Ramaphosa Looks Through Party Opposition at ANC Meeting

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The National Executive Committee meeting of the ANC this weekend came alongside the conclusion of the Integrity Commission’s investigation into the Phala Phala Scandal, which found that while the scandal has damaged the ANC politically, it cannot be concluded that Ramaphosa himself is to blame.
  • The inquiry’s findings have unsurprisingly come under fire from the President’s internal opposition, who see the report’s findings as ‘toothless’ ahead of the publication of branch nomination lists tomorrow.
  • The President’s closing remarks at the NEC called for unity and renewal and rejected calls for his resignation, paving the way for his re-election as leader in December.
  • Civil servants union groups have given the government a deadline of this Thursday to respond to wage and salary demands before pledging to “shut down the country” later this year. The action would likely be a repeat of the industrial action from last Thursday, according to EWN.
  • Focus this week turns to the findings of an independent commission to the National Assembly on whether sufficient evidence exists to proceed with the Section 89 impeachment process against Ramaphosa. The deadline here is Nov 16th, where we also get September retail sales.
